A brief account of the Most Rebellious town in Devon Local historian Colin Haynes undertook detailed research into Colyton’s role in the Monmouth rebellion of 1685. 105 men from Colyton (more than any other town in Devon) marched off with the Duke and fought at Sedgemoor. In the aftermath, during the bloody assize presided over by the infamous Judge Jeffries, 14 of them were hanged and 22 transported into slavery in the West Indies. Two Colyton rebels were hanged drawn and quartered and their body parts prominently displayed around the town as a grim reminder of the penalty for treason.
